Maker Faire CEO: Rockets and robots instead of pigs and pies (podcast)

Maker Faire gets underway this weekend in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006, San Francisco Bay Area maker movement aficionados have been making an annual pilgrimage to the San Mateo Event Center (the county fair grounds), to attend the Maker Faire. Self-described as "part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new," the Faire attracts a broad swath of attendees, not just in the Bay Area, but in other Maker Faires that are popping up around the world.

Last year 165,000 people attended the flagship events in the Bay Area and New York. There were also Maker Faires in Minneapolis, Detroit, and other cities around the world, according to the Faire's sponsor Maker Media (which also publishes Make magazine) .

What strikes me about the event is the mixture of high-tech, low-tech, and products that are a combination of both. You'll find robots and 3D printers, but also doily making, arts and crafts, and decidedly 20th century tools with 21st century twist, like an engraving machine that's controlled by a smartphone.

I've been to several Maker Faires and have always been impressed with the passion of the maker attendees, whether they're showing off an experimental new piece of tech hardware or beautiful things you can do with a needle and thread.

To find out more about the Maker Faire, I sat down with Maker Media Founder and CEO Dale Dougherty, who said that the Maker Faire is "kind of reinventing the fair." He said he "wanted to take many of the good sides of it, but instead of pigs and pies, we have rockets and robots." He added that the Faire is a chance for makers to "share with their friends and family and the whole community."

"We are creators and producers and makers of things," said Dougherty. "We don't just buy stuff. We have this desire and ability to create things."

BlackBerry Messenger jumps to iPhone, Android

Lots of news around BlackBerry in today's roundup. Not only is BlackBerry expanding the popular Messenger service as an app for Android and iOS, but it also is giving Messenger a social-media twist with BBM Channels.

BlackBerry keyboard fans in the U.S. are finally able to own the Q10 this summer when it arrives at T-Mobile, Verzion and Sprint. (Get the full Q10 review here.) Considering the phone was unveiled at the end of January, BlackBerry fans in the U.S. have had to wait awhile for any availability details. But as for the all-touchscreen BlackBerry Z10, its getting an operating system update to BB10.1.

Also in this episode of Update, get a first-look at the metal Nokia Lumia 925, arriving exclusively to T-Mobile in July. Verizon's top Windows Phone, the Lumia 928, arrives this week.

And take a game break on Google by searching the phrase "Atari Breakout" in a Google image search. It's one of Google's latest hidden tricks, known as an Easter egg. Another type of mini-game can be found by going to Google to search for the phrase "Zerg rush." Or see a cool effect by searching for the word "tilt" or the phrase "do a barrel roll." And in Google Maps, try getting walking directors from "The Shire" to "Mordor."

What to expect at Google I/O 2013

Google will announce new products and software updates at its annual Google I/O developers conference, which kicks off Wednesday in San Francisco. Today's Update gets you prepared with a look at what's expected, such as developments around gaming, social and Google Now.

For those hoping to see Android Key Lime Pie, you might have to settle for an update to Jelly Bean with Android 4.3.

It's expected Google will show off new hardware, including an updated Nexus 7 and possibly a new Nexus smartphone.

Google Glass will also be a big topic, but the latest rumor suggests Google may even surprise the audience with a smartwatch based on Glass functionality.

Exploring expert guidance through Glass

In this special edition of CNET Update, I put Google Glass to the test as a coaching tool. Since I need to learn archery to become a proper heroine (e.g. Katniss, Merida, Lara), I wanted to try an archery coaching session through a Google+ Hangout.

I reached out to CoachUp.com to find a coach that was willing to go on this tech adventure with me. CoachUp connected me with M.J. Rogers, an archery coach in South Dakota who has worked with Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

I traveled to Pro Line Archery Lanes in Queens to do the video chat with Rogers. Once we were connected, I could see Rogers talking from his webcam in my Glass display. But I discovered it was hard to hear him with other people talking in the room.

Rogers and I did several Glass Hangout tests before, and it was easy to hear him from my quiet office. At the indoor archery range, Rogers could hear me just fine, but the Glass speaker wasn't loud enough to overpower the few people talking in the room. That's because the Glass speaker rests against your head behind the ear -- not in your ear. Without a way to turn up volume, it would be nice to have the option to attach earbuds.

While at Pro Line Archery, the archers around me were kind enough to stop talking so I could hear the Hangout better.

The Google Glass team is working on this audio issue, according to Steve Lee, a project director for Google Glass. In the meantime, there is another way to talk in a Hangout. If someone at their computer types a message while in a Hangout chat, the text shows up on the Glass display.

Although the Glass camera doesn't show my true point of view, Rogers said the camera did provide a helpful perspective for him to judge how I'm holding the bow. He could tell I needed to work on my pose when I release the arrow.

Pro Line co-owner Neil Kucich was able to see some problems with my stance that Rogers couldn't see from the Glass camera. I would need to have a mirror near me for Rogers to get the whole picture. Nevertheless, Rogers said he could give coaching tips just from what he saw through Glass -- especially for judging perspective in relationship to the bow.

Using Glass as a learning tool goes far beyond archery. I'll continue to bring you stories about Glass as I spend more time with this wearable computer. If you have suggestions for a good use for Glass, or if you have an idea for a CNET Update Glass adventure, e-mail update@cnet.com.

Part of my job here at CNET is to play the devil's advocate, and sometimes that requires me to talk trash about products you love. This time around, I'm going to take a poke at a phone that we love as much as you do, the Samsung Galaxy S4.

You'd be hard pressed to find a smartphone on our site that comes more highly recommend than the S4, but that doesn't mean that it's right for absolutely everybody. So if you're about to press the "add to cart" button on a new Galaxy S4 and you need a friend to talk you down, I'm here for you. Now, go watch my video.

Justin Kitch launches 'Curious' learning network (podcast)

It's called a "marketplace for online learning" and its goal is to connect students and teachers in a wide variety of subjects from salsa dancing to knife sharpening. If there is something you can teach or want to learn, Curious.com could be the place to start.

The $3 it costs to take this class is cheaper than a beer in most bars.

Co-founded by Justin Kitch, a former Intuit executive who founded Homestead, Curious.com empowers teachers to not only post video lessons but use other tools such as exercises, projects, discussion boards, and the ability to attach files. Teachers decide if their classes are free or if there is a charge -- typically between $1 and $3 per lesson.

Teachers can use the company's "Curious Lesson Builder" to build, publish, and market their lessons. Learners can submit "Curious Cards" to share their achievements and interact with teachers, according to Kitch.

In our interview (scroll down to listen) Kitch said he was inspired by YouTube which, he acknowledges, is a place where people post educational videos. But, he added, YouTube lacks many of the important features necessary for a good learning experience, including the ability to easily contact the instructor. Curious.com, said Kitch, started "with the idea of what we call a short format video-based lesson but added all these other things that we found to be really critical to creating a learning experience."

One of the killer features of Android is now available to Apple devices. It's called Google Now, and iOS users will find it inside the Google Search app. Google Now can be thought of as a personal assistant app. It taps into your location and Google accounts to learn about you, and it displays info you might find interesting. For example, it can alert you to traffic on your commute to work or the latest score of the sports team you follow. On Android, Google Now is limited to devices with 4.1 Jelly Bean, but the Android version has has a few more features than the iOS app. For example, Android users can get pop-up notifications, but Apple users have to go into the Google Search app.

Apple fans will have to wait until the fall for new "amazing" products, or so promises CEO Tim Cook.

Samsung fans will also be doing some waiting. The Galaxy S4 was said to hit stores this weekend, but the smartphone is facing supply issues -- and that's causing T-Mobile and Sprint to push back launch dates and only sell online. But you may be able to find one on Saturday in stores at AT&T, and on Tuesday at U.S. Cellular. [Read CNET's review here.]

For shoppers that plan on grabbing a Galaxy S4 from Best Buy, you might come across the retailer's new Samsung mini-stores, staffed by Samsung employees. And these Samsung shops will be larger than Apple's Best Buy mini-store area.

For those that share passwords with family and friends, Netflix will offer a new plan that allows four devices to stream at the same time.

If you don't care about Netflix and rather not live on this planet anymore, Mars One is looking for volunteers to join a colony on the Red Planet.

If you want to quickly buy a bunch of movies for the seven-month Mars trip, there's now the option to download later on iTunes.

And if you want to eat some good Earth food before dedicating yourself to a life of drinking recycled urine, Facebook refreshed the design of mobile pages to focus more on ratings. (Foursquare did a refresh, too.)

Only a select group gets the chance to buy this early version of Google Glass, but here's something Android fans can order now: The Samsung Galaxy S4. Preorders have begun for the smartphone at AT&T and U.S. Cellular, and the phones will ship on April 30.

Facebook found a way to bring Chat Heads to the iPhone, but it only works within the app. Facebook also launched a messaging feature called stickers, which are oversized cartoons to represent emotions. Only iOS users can send a sticker, but any user can receive one.

And Update ends with a look at the role of technology in communications following the bombings at the Boston Marathon. Police turned to Twitter for tips, crowdsourced videos could help investigators, and cell networks went down due to high traffic.
